Does the expansion fit in the original Wingspan box?
The European Expansion components can fit tightly into the original box. The extra components included in the Oceania Expansion will not.
Can I play this expansion without the Wingspan core game? Is it balanced if I mix and match various components?
All of our expansions require at least some components from the core game (action tokens, eggs, bonus cards, goal tiles and board, etc). However, in terms of bird cards, you can mix and match as you wish: Oceania and core, Oceania and European, etc. With smaller groups, you could even play with only the Oceania birds or only the European birds. Or you could do what I’m doing and shuffle all birds together. The various mixes are balanced (including bonus card percentages, within a percentage point or so).
If you play with nectar, you’ll need to use the new player mats, Oceania birds, and the Oceania food dice. If you don’t play with nectar, you can play with either version of the player mats, the original food dice, and any birds (except the 17 birds in Oceania that have nectar in their costs/abilities).
Can I play this expansion without other expansions?
Absolutely. We don’t make any expansions that depend on other expansions.
Are the original player mats now useless?
Far from it–please keep your original mats! The Oceania mats are simply different, that’s all. Whenever you play Wingspan with just the core game and/or the European expansion (or future expansions), you can use either the original player mats or the Oceania mats. The original mats have considerably less iconology on them, making them more welcoming for new players. Also, whenever we create a new expansion, we must operate under the assumption that a significant number of people who buy it will only have the core game. So while new expansions will hopefully function with the Oceania playmats, they’ll be designed primarily for the original player mats.
